Claustrophobics, you might want to skip this one.
Mine 9 opens with a group of men working deep in a West Virginia coal mine. A sudden methane leak ends up causing a small fire, which they eventually get under control. Some of the miners want to report the leak to safety monitors, but others fear the loss of their jobs if the mine is subsequently closed down. They decided to keep mum. You can probably guess where this is headed next.
Naturally, the big leak/fire waits to happen until a rookie is having his first day down in the mine. Several are killed instantly, and the survivors have less than an hour’s worth of air left to figure out what to do. The movie comes down on the thriller rather than spectacle side, as the events play out in near-real time. Can they reach safety before they run out of oxygen?
Mine 9 is the directorial debut of Eddie Mensore (The Deposition), who also wrote the screenplay. The cast includes Terry Serpico (The Purge: Election Year), Mark Ashworth (The Magnificent Seven), Kevin Sizemore (Fear the Walking Dead), Drew Starkey (The Hate U Give), and Erin Elizabeth Burns (Cell).
The film went into limited release in the US on April 12.
