Norway is emerging as a contender in the disaster-movie arena.
Following the success of such hits as The Wave and The Quake, production company TrustNordisk has now sold distribution rights to its upcoming thriller The Tunnel (Tunnelen) to several countries at the recent Marche du Cannes. These include France, Germany, Russia, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, Poland, and Bulgaria; Mexico and Latin America; and Korea, China, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Still no word on a North or South American deal, though.
The Tunnel, based on an actual incident, tells the story of families and tourists trapped in a mountain tunnel with a burning tanker truck, while a blizzard outside complicates rescue efforts.
The film reteams Villmark 2‘s director and writer (Pål Øie and Kjersti Helen Rasmussen, respectively). Producers include John Einar Hagen and Einar Loftesnes (TrustNordisk) with support from the Norwegian Film Institute, Zefyr Media Fund, and the Western Norway Film Centre. The cast features Thorbjørn Harr (Vikings), Lisa Carlehed (Follow the Money), and Ylva Fuglerud (Kielergata).
The Tunnel is slated to premiere in Norway on Christmas Day.
