In today’s “Nothing New Under the Sun” (or water) news, I bring you the trailer for Underwater. If you think it might be reminiscent of The Abyss, you’d be right.
Kristen Stewart (Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria, and, of course, Twilight) stars as Norah, lead scientist for a band of motley researchers who descend 7 miles down into the ocean, from a platform 5000 miles from land, to study *mumbleitdoesntreallymattermumble*. Unfortunately, an undersea earthquake damages their vessel, forcing Norah and company to suit up and attempt to get back to the platform. How they’re not crushed instantly by the pressure is unclear, as is why they’re walking along the bottom of the ocean rather than trying to ascend immediately, where the air is.
Anyway, turns out that a combo of the earthquake and vibrations from the loud rock music they’ve been playing in the vessel(?) have Awakened a Creature of the Deep. You can probably guess the story from here.
Joining Stewart in this, ahem, film are Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Westworld) and T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley, Ready Player One), who is still working his way through the federal legal process after being charged with calling in a false bomb threat in March 2018. The director is William Eubank (The Signal), and the writers are Brian Duffield (Insurgent, The Babysitter) and Adam Cozad (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit).
Underwater will emerge from the depths in France on January 8, 2020 and in the U.S. on January 10.
