Andrew Lau’s air disaster film The Captain sat atop China’s box office Friday, the China Movie Data Information Network said Saturday.
On Day 12 of its wide release in China, the drama grossed more than 58 million yuan (about $8.2 million USD), and its total worldwide box office revenue is more than 2 billion yuan ($283 million).
The Captain tells the story of the May 14, 2018 incident involving Sichuan Airlines Flight 8633, when its pilot achieved an emergency landing of the Llasa-bound airplane and brought 119 passengers and 9 crew members down safely.
After limited releases in UK, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Ireland, the film will receive a limited release in the U.S. on October 18, 2019. The Captain was produced by Bona Film Group, Alibaba Pictures, and Huaxia Film Distribution and is being distributed in the U.S. by Well Go USA Entertainment.
