Two pieces of casting news today.
First, Josh Gad has been named as the first cast member for Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall. The movie tells the story of a ragtag (of course!) team that is sent to the moon after it has fallen out of orbit, putting it on a collision course with Earth. Gad will be playing the role of KC Houseman, an oddball who correctly predicted the abnormal orbit, making him an important member of the team.
Gad first came to fame in originating the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, but he is probably best known as the voice of Olaf in the Frozen movies and as Le Fou in the live-action film version of Beauty and the Beast.
Gad also has a new YouTube series called “Reunited Apart,” which aims to raise money for Project HOPE, a global medical, educational and humanitarian assistance organization.
Disaster movie legend Emmerich (2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla) is directing, cowriting the script with Harald Kloser (2012) and Spenser Cohen (Extinction). Centropolis Entertainment, Street Entertainment, and AGC Studios are producing the movie on a budget of $150 million, and filming is expected to begin this fall, pandemic permitting.
Meanwhile, in news from South Korea, Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun will be joining Jeon Do-yeon in Emergency Declaration, an air disaster movie.
Veteran actor Song is well known for his prominent roles in Snowpiercer and the multiple Oscar-winning Parasite. In Emergency Declaration, Song will be playing the lead detective investigating the incident.
Lee is an established actor (Red 2, Terminator Genisys), singer, and model. He is also the first Korean actor to present an Oscar. Lee will be playing a father who is afraid of flying but must board the plane for the sake of his daughter (Jeon), director of the airline.
Jeon won the Best Actress award at the 60th Cannes Film Festival for her performance as a widow in Chang-dong Lee’s Milyang (Secret Sunshine). She was the first Korean actress to win an acting award at Cannes.
Other cast include Kim Nam-gil (Pandora, The Shameless) as the copilot, actor-singer Im Siwan (of K-pop group ZE:A) as a passenger, Kim So-jin (The King) as a flight attendant, and Park Hae-joon (The World of The Married) as the head of the government’s crisis management center.
Han Jae-rim (The Rules of Dating) is the director-writer of Emergency Declaration, which is being produced by C-JeS Entertainment. Filming is set to begin at the end of May if conditions allow.
