Patrick Wilson (Aquaman, The Conjuring) has been tapped as the lead in Moonfall, Roland Emmerich’s latest entry in the disaster movie genre. Wilson had previously worked with Emmerich on his last film, the World War II drama Midway. Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), who appeared in Emmerich’s All the Money in the World, also will be joining the increasingly impressive cast.
The film’s story—written by Emmerich, his 2012 cowriter Harald Kloser, and Spenser Cohen (Extinction)—kicks off when a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit and sets it on a collision course with Earth. The standard-issue ragtag team is sent on last-ditch effort to land on the lunar surface and Save Us All.
Wilson will play the disgraced NASA ex-astronaut leading said team. Turns out his last, disastrous mission might offer information about the impending collision. Plummer will be playing his (presumably rebellious) teenage son. My money is on Wilson sacrificing himself for the Good of All Mankind, à la Bruce Willis in Armageddon.
Costars include Oscar winner Halle Berry, who will play a former colleague of Wilson’s character, and Grammy winner/Tony nominee Josh Gad, playing the oddball genius who had deduced that the moon was off course.
Emmerich and Kloser are producing the movie through their respective companies, Centropolis and Street Entertainment. Lionsgate will be distributing the film in North America, as they did with Midway.
Production on Moonfall is slated to begin in fall 2020 in Montreal, conditions permitting, with a release date some time in 2021.
