It’s not often you see a disaster-movie cast that has 7 Oscars, 3 Emmys, and multiple Grammys among them. And oh, yeah, the director has an Oscar and two Emmys. And the cinematographer has 3 Oscars, too.
Written and directed by Emmy- and Oscar-winner Adam McKay (Vice, The Big Short, Succession), Don’t Look Up tells the story of a lowly astronomer (Jennifer Lawrence) and her partner (Leonardo DiCaprio) who discover that a giant asteroid is on a collision course for Earth. They journey around the U.S. to try to warn people about it, but you know the drill—they’re not believed until It’s Almost Too Late. Robert Richardson (Hugo, The Aviator, JFK) is on hand to make the movie’s cinematography gorgeous.
Now check out the rest of the cast: Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry, Himesh Patel, Rob Morgan, and Tomer Sisley. Unreal.
McKay described the film as follows: “I don’t think it’s a Step Brothers-type of comedy. I would compare it more to somewhere between the Mike Judge stuff and Wag the Dog. A hard funny satire is what we’re going for.”
The film is being produced by Hyperobject Industries for Netflix. Filming is likely to begin early in 2021, which would still give it time to be eligible for next year’s award season. And with that cast and crew, there’s a decent chance it’ll get some, too.
