The man who put the “inferno” in The Towering Inferno has passed away. Fred J. Koenekamp, a veteran of more than 40 feature films alone, died May 31.
In addition to winning the Academy Award for Inferno, Koenekamp was nominated for Oscars for his work on Patton and Islands in the Stream. He also garnered two Emmy nominations for his work on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers in 2005.
He is survived by his daughter Kathy. Donations may be made to Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida or the Alzheimer’s Association of the Gulf Coast.
