Film School Rejects gives a few reasons for the rise of the (mostly summer) blockbuster disaster movie, and the genre’s effects on other types of movie—science fiction/fantasy in particular. But all of them boil down to this:
We don’t care about the people because of the disaster; we care about the disaster because of the people.
Or cows, as the case may be.
