How many times do we have to say it? Don’t perform genetic experiments in a disaster movie!
In Rampage, Dwayne Johnson—who is rapidly becoming the go-to guy for big-budget disaster movies, what with San Andreas 1+2 and the upcoming Skyscraper—plays Davis Okoye, a primatologist who has been lifelong friends with George, a giant albino silverback gorilla. Things Go Horribly Wrong when a rogue genetic experiment spins out of control, changing George and other alpha predators into monsters that, well, rampage across the U.S. It’s up to Davis and (who else?) a discredited genetic engineer to create and distribute an antidote to save George and the other animals. Naturally, they’ll need to fight several battles in the course of their heroics.
Rampage is based on the 1986 Bally Midway video game of the same name, which featured giant animal monsters destroying cities. So I’m not sure you should be looking for deep character development on this one.
The film reunites Johnson with San Andreas’ director, Brad Peyton. The original script was written by Ryan Engle (Non-Stop), with rewrites by Ryan Condal (Colony) and Carlton Cuse (San Andreas 1+2). Stars include Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen; The Walking Dead), Malin Akerman (also Watchmen), Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike), and Naomie Harris (Moonlight).
Rampage is slated for release on April 20, 2018.
