There is no joy in Mudville today, fans. SyFy/The Asylum’s Sharknado franchise will be closing up shop after the upcoming sixth film.
As you may recall, the Earth had been destroyed by the end of Sharknado 5: Global Swarming. So what’s left for Ian Ziering’s hero Finn to do? Why, go back in time and try to prevent the original sharkstorm, naturally—a la the Terminator franchise. And according to SyFy, the sixth movie also will include “fights, Nazis, dinosaurs, knights, and … Noah’s Ark,” because why the hell not. If you’re going to go out, go out with a bang.
Original stars Tara Reid, Cassie Scerbo, and Vivica A. Fox will be rejoining Ziering for the finale, as will director Anthony C. Ferrante and writer Thunder Levin.
The Sharknado phenomenon grew from a humble 2013 TV movie that had an estimated budget of $1 million. That film garnered a 3.3 rating on IMdB but a whopping 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. SyFy knew they were on to something.
Over the next 4 years, both the rankings and the budgets grew, peaking in 2015 with Sharknado 3: Oh, Hell No, which has a 4.2 rating on IMdB on a budget of $4.2 million. Later entries haven’t done as well, with ratings on IMdB hovering around 4, and Rotten Tomatoes ratings no higher than 36%. We will see whether the last entry can break the low-ratings streak.
Sharknado 6 will arrive on July 25 on the SyFy channel.
