I think my world is now complete—Jason Statham is going to be in a disaster movie!
In the upcoming The Meg, Statham plays Jonas (Jonah?) Taylor, a diver and former Navy Captain whose career and marriage have been destroyed by his claims of being attacked by an enormous, believed-to-be-extinct shark in the Mariana Trench. When will these people learn that if someone reports a huge predator, especially in the Western Pacific, BELIEVE them?
In any event, when Jonas’ ex-wife (because of course) and her team become trapped in a submersible at the bottom of the ocean, Jonas gets the call. Think he’s going to run into an old friend down there? Maybe his friend Meg, otherwise known as Carcharodon megalodon (literally: “big tooth”)?
Joining Statham on his team are Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black, John Wick: Chapter 2) and Rainn Wilson (The Office). The film is directed by Jon Turteltaub (the National Treasure movies), with a screenplay adapted by James Vanderbilt (White House Down) from Steve Alten’s novel.
The Meg opens on August 20 in the U.S.
