News from Cannes: Avenger Chris Evans will be joining District 9 director Neill Blomkamp in his upcoming disaster movie, Greenland.
Although the plot is being kept under tight wraps, it appears to be about one family’s fight for survival after a cataclysmic natural disaster. This won’t be Evans’ first time at the apocalyptic rodeo—he also had a leading role in the 2013 science-fiction film Snowpiercer, in which the only remaining life on a frozen Earth is contained in a constantly moving train.
Blomkamp is no stranger to science fiction, either. His three previous features—District 9 (2009), Elysium (2015), and Chappie (2015)—involved aliens, living in space, and artificial intelligence becoming sentient, respectively. Along the way, Blomkamp explored class divisions and apartheid, among other heavy themes, so it will be interesting to see whether he and writer Chris Sparling (Buried, The Sea of Trees) incorporate any elements of these concepts into Greenland.
Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk (John Wick) is producing, along with Anton. Anton is also cofinancing (with Riverstone Pictures), while STXinternational is handling overseas distribution.
David Kosse, President of STXinternational, said, “Greenland is the kind of highly commercial genre fare that sees Neill Blomkamp doing what he does best: delivering a smart, fresh, high concept narrative in a world we can easily recognize.”
Principal photography is to begin in the last quarter of 2018.
