Another rare Russian disaster movie is coming to U.S. video-on-demand platforms. Released elsewhere in 2016, The Crew (original title: Ekipazh) tells the story of a dishonorably discharged pilot who finds love and a shot at redemption while trying to land safely and rescue survivors during a volcanic eruption and series of earthquakes.
The film has already been a hit in most parts of the world—it has long since earned back nearly triple its $10 million budget and currently has a 6.9 rating on IMdB. And at the 2017 Russian APKiT (Association of Film and Television Producers) Awards, it was awarded Best Feature Film, Best Visual Effects, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music, and Best Film Editing. It remains Russia’s third highest-grossing film ever.
Reworking the 1980 original film of the same name, Nikolay Lebedev (The Star, Legend No. 17) directed and cowrote the script with Tikhon Kornev, Yuriy Korotkov, Nikolay Kulikov, and Aleksey Onishechenko. Stars include Vladimir Mashkov, Egor Morozov, and Agne Grudyte.
No word yet about which video platforms will carry the film, so be on the lookout as of June 25.
