It’s been interesting to see the evolution of disaster movies from straight-up spectacle to backdrop for another type of genre film. Hurricane Heist mixed a natural disaster with, well, a heist, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a disaster–conspiracy thriller mashup. Now we have How It Ends, which appears to mix Taken with an end-of-the-world scenario.
Theo James (the Divergent series) stars as Will, who receives a disturbing phone call from his wife Sam (Kat Graham; The Vampire Diaries) just before the world goes to hell in a mysterious apocalyptic event. Since he’s with his in-laws at the time, he and thorny his father-in-law Tom (Forest Whitaker; Lee Daniels’ The Butler) decide to go out into the chaos and track her down.
David M. Rosenthal (See This Movie, Falling Up) directs, with a debut script by Brooks McLaren. How It Ends will arrive in the U.S. and Singapore on Netflix on July 13.
