When last we left Tsunami LA, there was no word yet on casting, a distributor, or a release timeframe. Now we have all three.
Korean megastar Gang Dong-won will be making his Hollywood debut in the film, which tells the story of Los Angelenos dealing with the largest tsunami to ever hit L.A. Gang will join the production, which is filming in the U.K. and Mexico, after he finishes work on Kim Ji-woon’s adaptation of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade in April.
Gang’s long film career has yielded numerous awards from Asian film organizations, and a Star Asia award from the New York Asian Film Festival. His best-known work is Ui-hyeong-je (Secret Reunion), an action-thriller. Says Tsunami LA director Simon West: “He has been doing great work in Korea. I’m delighted to be able to bring this wonderful actor to the world.”
South Korean distributor J&C Media Group has acquired the film, and is aiming for a 2019 release in Korea and the U.S. The movie’s budget is an estimated $55 million, according to production companies Hannibal Classics and Foresight Unlimited.
