If it’s July, it must be time for the San Diego Comic-Con. And if it’s Comic-Con, there must be trailers for upcoming geeky movies. Case in point: Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
G:KotM is set in Warner Bros/Legendary’s MonsterVerse, which also includes 2014’s Godzilla reboot and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. In this first trailer, we see members of a “crypto-zoological agency” searching for a lineup of “Titan” megamonsters, each of which is required for humanity’s survival. But the press release from Warner Bros says that when the creatures “rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.” Mixed messages aside, looks like Godzilla will be tangling with some of his most famous adversaries, including:
- Mothra: a massive moth that can shoot blinding “god rays” from her chest
- Rodan: a huge pterodactyl that has igneous-rock skin and a wingspan so big it can create catastrophic sonic claps
- King Ghidorah: a three-headed dragon that can create apocalyptic storms while flying
From the title, I’m guessing that Godzilla emerges victorious. And the cinematography looks gorgeous.
Michael Dougherty (Krampus) directs from a script cowritten by Doughtery, Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Minority Report), and Zach Shields (Krampus). Stars include Milly Bobbie Brown (Stranger Things), Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Kyle Chandler (Game Night).
Godzilla: King of the Monsters smashes its way into US theaters on May 31, 2019.
